Smoke and Mirrors, whats the deal with the motorcycle industry?

What's up with the motorcycle industry?

I have never seen any other industry where so many dealers or shops will advertise something made by someone else as "theirs". It seems like every day I see it more and more. I have seen many websites calling something theirs, saying they made it, or just plain not saying who it is really made by. It really cracks me up when they claim something is theirs, but are using a picture taken from another MFG's website of their product!

I have also seen many shops claiming to do things "in house" and then turn around and ship it off to other companies to have stuff done........Heads, Machine work, Paint, Body work, Welding, motor builds, suspension.........

I have never seen any other industry filled with so many lies and deception as this one.

Oh, and I just to clear the air, It was brought up in another thread that Psychotic Air was using another companies product and claiming it as our own. We have never done that. We use a product that is available directly from the MFG to the public and can be bought on their website. We have never claimed it was "ours" we never claimed that "we" designed it. We are simply a customer of that perticular company. Yes, we sell that product as a dealer, but it is not "ours". The product I am referring to is www.Illuma-FX.com

I'm with you quick! It has taken me forever to order parts for my build because I want to buy from the company that makes the shit! That way if there is ever a problem your dealing with the source and not a middle man

I should also note, I am not trying to call anyone out in this thread. I am simply saying whats up with this? Have you guys noticed it? As a consumer I find it very deceptive and it makes me want to shop with other vendors or dealers.

Agreed. Especially with trees that don't require cutting the frame, and I'm not referring to any board sponsors. It gets very confusing to the consumer.

Or company's that reps a product, and they say they carry it in stock only to have to wait forever because they dont carry it.then you have to wait for them to order it from the manufacture then ship it to them then ship it to you to save you 15 dollars.

I would rather just get it from the source and avoid the middle man sometimes.

I won't lie, we are a middle man. Some guys like to save $15-200 on something. That's cool, we will help. Our biggest reason for becoming a dealer of these products is to supply our local customers. Now we can offer a one stop shop for mods they don't want to or cant DIY

I'll be up front about it. Nothing worse than waiting by the door for a part. I'm like a little kid waiting for parts! The UPS driver is like Santa to me!

I recently got kinda screwed on a part on EBay. waited 3 weeks for it!

I'm also a consumer so I know how it goes. We can't get everything, so I still have to shop around.

Opunui and Quik, 808 started a thread about the shipping as well. We understand that shipping is the pits for both of us and we are willing to pay the shipping.
We also explain all of this when we try and buy, and are usually shut down. CONUS, 48 only.
Sorry don't mean to steal thread. Just my opinion on all of this. Talking smoke and mirrors.

That sucks! As long as you understand and pay the shipping it shouldn't be an issue. Can you guys get HD parts at decent prices at least?

No. We can't buy from American dealers at all unless we have an american address. Which I can arrange, but if I don't get in contact immediately with a person, I leave a message they don't return my call. So all in all I either end up paying Trevor Dealy tax as we call it up here. Approximately 10 to 15 percent over your pricing. I think 808 does a little better on this than I.

It really sucks to say, but there are few industries left where it is profitable to actually be THE manufacturer. It is far better to assemble a group of parts that you as the "manufacturer" feel are the best for the particular "part". Look at GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc., they just assemble a bunch of parts from multiple other suppliers. Its not just motorcycles, but it is a bit more obvious I think with the bike parts.

I deal with it every day in the audio & electronics world. People actually believe there individual manufacturers for every brand and that every single thing is different. Give me a break, there are about 10 manufacturers for mobile/marine/motorcycle audio "brands".

In the end, its whoever treats you the best and provides a true solution that also fits the best for the application for you and your customer.

But marketing & branding, for better or for worse, does work and everyone has to brand. There are a lot of us that brand on other peoples products, but it is done with permission in my case and yes even Yaffe has Cycle Sounds permission from what I am aware. And who is going to say no to a guy selling the crap out of a piece of plastic anyways!? Its the mold, packaging, grilles, gaskets, and shipping as a retail part that costs the most. Probably a few dollars worth of plastic and labor involved!

Thats my 2 cents on it.....

This thread was never about shipping. We understand that is the price to live in paradise. Any body can create a store front and get a business license to get dealer pricing. My point was...if you say you have it in stock then I take your word.
