Is Harley Davidson gonna be worth buying???

Last week my friend had a good story about the people who are currently manufacturing HD's.

A friend of his that works at the York Pa plant took a part in to work from his HD that needed reworked. As he was leaving the parking lot the guards at the front gate stopped him and asked to look in his trunk. The guy thought he was in trouble and told the guards that he had a part in his trunk but that it belongs to the bike he has at home and had documents to prove it. The guards said they are not worried about the part. They are looking for inmates trying to sneak out in the trunks of cars from employees on the previous shift. And then try and sneak back in with employees on the latter shift.

HD was hiring 400 employees but only got 100 applicants so they hired inmates from the local jail on work release program. The are paying them $15 an hour for all skill levels. Welders, painters and assembly. Constant weekly revolving employment. So you know they are building junk.

Are these new bike worth the $40k+ HD is charging???
Would you spend your hard earned money on bikes built by people that have no idea what they are doing???

I’ve never bought new before....don’t plan to. However I don’t think HD is going to pay $15 an hour to a new employee that has never held a torch in their hand.

If this is true, I have been unable verify it and I wouldn't blame Harley for keeping it hush. The Milwaukee plant is hiring some ex-offenders to work on their automated machines, but nothing about the York assembly plant - https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/wisconsin/articles/2018-07-21/wisconsin-company-hires-former-inmates-helps-them-succeed Also, $15.00 per hour for a union job? That's only about $30K a year before any overtime. Seems low. Saw several ads for Harley in York paying between $17 - 28 per hr.

Hopefully anyone that can find out more information can help shed some more light on this.

I honestly don't care who is making the bikes. Any inmates who are cleared to work at a factory outside of the prison are generally gonna be folks who want to do right, and have a chance to get somewhere. I wouldn't worry too much about them being on the production line.

I think that's a huge part of it, as long as the bike is quality. The only thing that has to be looked at - or a concern is that sometimes they are using the prison labor as slave labor basically.

For most non sex based crimes/random murders I am cool with giving folks a chance to learn a skill etc. This is assuming they are trained properly, HD does good QC etc. If we don't get folks some training and ability to find employment they usually end up doing the same stuff.

That said, I don't know if any of these programs work but I am ok with giving people a chance to improve their lot.
